Using the Library

Image
The current group gift at Dragon Magick Wares is this stunning picture of a Dragonia Maiden hung above my bed.  I liked it so much I decided to use it as a base (along with the colour scheme of my quilt) to colour coordinate my whole bedroom. Fortunately I was able to pick out some green options from those included with my bed for the pillows. But I just didn't like the green wallpapers that came with my wall shell. I'm on a tight budget, as I'm saving my weekly stipend to buy a couch from LiViD, so although I've spotted a green and pink wallpaper that I think would look great, I'm holding off from buying it at the moment as it only comes bundled together with several other colourways in a texture pack. In the mean time I found this green wallpaper in the Library section right below My Inventory of the Inventory window. It's actually supposed to be a fabric texture so it has to be tiled vertically and horizontally to get it to look more like wallpape

LSL: Making Professor Kirke's wardrobe from the Narnia series

Image
I wanted a teleportation device that was a wardrobe - think The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - but I couldn't find one that was low land impact. In the end I decided to find a single prim wardrobe with copy and modify permissions that I could add a script to. The wardrobe used here is the Whimsy Rose Knotted Armoire in Black , that I tinted brown. I then inserted a teleporter script written by Sheena Desade and called the Sim-to-Sim PseudoTeleporter v.31 . This script can be used by anyone and will give them a SURL in chat that can be clicked on to teleport to anywhere on the grid. The script file can be used as is, but the Data file requires precise formatting to work: Love & Light ♒️ Aqua ♒️

The Well-Read Witch Coven: a Second Life reading group

Image
I like to read witch-lit, fantasy and magic realism. On looking for a suitable reading group for me to join, and finding nothing, I decided to start a new group: The Well-Read Witch Coven . You need at least two avatars for a group so I persuaded my good friend Kaia to join too. We're currently reading a non-fiction book, The Witch: A History of Fear from Ancient Times to the Present by Ronald Hutton. The group is open and free to join for witches, wizards, muggles, animals and fae (and anybody/thing that I've left out). The plan is that we will meet up once a month in my large living room at my home in Gaunt Ring to discuss whatever we have read that month. I'm European, so after 1PM SLT is best - or at the weekend. Looking ahead, we're planning to read the following books through to June (relevant discussion guides that we intend to use in the book club in brackets): February: The Invisible Library,  Genevieve Cogman  ( discussion questions ) Marc

Is Roimira's half-submerged house a sign that mermaids are coming to Linden Homes?

Image
I was exploring one of the newly released coastal regions near my home, Roimira, and came upon this half-submerged house. Clearly I was not appropriately dressed for a dip in the ocean so I came back in the light with a tail and a swimming AO. Many residents have been bemoaning the lack of variety in Fantasseria. All the houses are of the Lord of the Rings elven style. There are no hobbit houses, there are no dark and creepy witch houses (despite witches clearly being considered as potential residents - my home region of Gaunt Ring is named for Marvolo Gaunt's ring that is one of the horcruxes in the Harry Potter series), certainly no mermaid houses. Certainly it's interesting to explore the Protected Areas, there are often unexpected Easter Eggs, but hopefully we can expect some more variety in housing-type to come. House tour: the study

Image
Here's my study. As well as my bookcase - with scripted shelves contents - and my desk with my homemade pile of astrological papers, you can see my pet phoenix Moses and my cauldron stove with pale blue flames. The dark blue wallpaper is actually a dark grey and white wallpaper that I've tinted blue. Astrological Papers from Aquarius Astrology

Image
If you've taken a fancy to the astrological papers in my study and would like some of your own to include on your own desk you can now download them for free from my Marketplace store: Aquarius Astrology . Included in the folder is my calling card so that you contact me directly about a personal astrological report. You will also be able to download demo and personalised reports from my store very shortly. My RL avatar has been unwell for the past week so I'm a little slow posting and it's going to take me some time to update my store - but I'll get there. Best, ♒ Aqua ♒

LSL: Book giving script 1

Image
In my study I have a bookcase that has two shelves filled with books and potion bottles. Those books and bottles are actually one texture on the face of a single prim sold as a wooden bookcase itself called RE Potions & Bottles Cabinet but moved and stretched (or rather cropped) so that all that appears are the contents of two shelves. Then within that one prim cabinet object there is a copy of the giver script from Kira Komarov with the GIVE_TYPE set to 6 and touch_start to only respond to llGetOwner() rather than llDetectedKey() as in my notecard giver . GIVE_TYPE 6 corresponds to objects, so is the type needed to give rezzable books. Remember that llDetectedKey() gives the ID of the last object/avatar to trigger a procedure. I use this bookcase to store my non-transferable books, therefore it's really important to check that avatars that cannot access my books aren't able to try or an error will be thrown. By using llGetOwner, my books ignore requests from

House tour: the kitchen

Image
My kitchen is where you will always find a tasty meal ready for unexpected guests. Here you see my C&C cauldron keeping chicken soup warm, while my musical cauldron brews something pink that will - if the music is to be believed - put a spell on you. If you come over to visit me do feel free to help yourself, but be careful you don't mix them up or you may fall in love with me. Like most witches, I never do anything that a good spell can't take care of for me, so in the corner you'll enchanted broom from C&C sweeping up the dust and crumbs. The wall texture is from Creative Idol and has been applied to the walls in as close as possible to maximum size instead of being tiled. The texture (Goth Babe) has a painterly feel that looks better in a kitchen as a stencil-effect rather than minimised - wallpaper being completely impractical in a witch's kitchen with its near constant source of steam. ♒ Aqua ♒  Shopping List Candle and Cauldron : Enchanted Broo

Night riding with Rhiannon's Eirwin

Image
Rideable horses are available within Second Life from a variety of sellers for anything from a couple of hundred linden dollars to several thousand for the feature rich, best ones. But there are other options as you can see from this lovely nighttime shot along the public highways of Fantasseria - it looks as beautiful as this all over the island when dusk falls. Several of the free starter avatars in Second Life include horses, and one - Rhiannon - includes a female riding animation overrider (AO) that you can wear instead of the default AO that came with your avatar. To find Rhiannon you just select the Complete avatars button from the menu on the left of the screen - the one that shows the man and woman icon like those used to indicate male and female changing rooms or toilets. Rhiannon is a brunette wearing blue and you can just see her archery bow behind her shoulder. Click Select and all the inventory items associated with her avatar will appear in your My Inventory f

House tour: the dining room

Image
My house is of the Stonebrooke type, which has a circular porch leading to a large triple-aspect room to the right of the building. From that large room, there are double patio doors to the back garden and an archway leading to a small hallway on the left. This hallway is where I decided to place my dining room furniture. This room is actually quite difficult to work with, all four walls have a door or entry wall centrally placed - here you can see the two doors in two of those walls - so furniture needs to be small. There is no room for a 12-seater banquet table in this area. Botanica's Nevermore range is ideal and very low land impact needing just 6 LI when my Yuletide decorations are removed. Don't forget to click on the radio to get my suggested Spotify playlist as described in my previous blog post . And if you sit at the table a menu of food and drink will magically appear. Stonebrooke, like all Linden Homes in Fantassaria, has plain walls by default. To be a

LSL: A notecard giver

Image
You can set your land to play an Internet radio station that others can listen to, but you can't stream Spotify to your visitors. I needed something to hide the gap behind my Botanica Nevermore fireplace, which I had rotated to fit into a corner. I thought an antique radio would work well on the mantelpiece and, ideally I would like it to play tracks from the Spotify Wednesday Soundtrack. I bought a Copy/Modify radio from Velvet Whip and wrote a very simple Linden Scripting Language (LSL) script that would allow the radio to give a notecard on touch. Every script in LSL needs at least one state: default, although others are possible. The code that is run in default is sandwiched between { and }. To get something to happen when you touch the object you use: touch_start(integer num_detected) Note the touch_start is indented as it is part of default. num_detected is what's known as a variable. You can call this variable anything you like, if you read other scripts you

Modifying an object's texture using the Color Picker window

Image
Sometimes you find an object that you really like, but it's not quite perfect. If you could just tweak the textures you'd be happy. As long as your object has Modify permissions you can change it. Start by right-clicking on the object you want to change. Here I have a great table from Botanica's Nevermore range. I really like it, but I don't want the blood stains. To hide them what I did was select the Select Face option button from the top of the Build window. Then click on the object face that I want to change. The table top is blood stained so I selected that face. You'll know you have the correct face selected when it's the surface that has the crosshairs icon showing and the other faces no longer have crossbars displayed. Below the option buttons and check boxes there are five buttons: General, Object, Features, Texture and Content. Make sure that Texture is selected. The Color begins as white, but to hide the blood stains it needs to be darker. Click on t
